Dongchong Beach
东涌The verdict
Strongly worth it if your goal is the coastal hike, solitude, or a cheap overnight — it's Shenzhen's frontier beach. Skip it for swimming or anything resembling facilities.
Perfect for
- ✓ Hikers doing the Dongchong-Xichong trail from the quiet end
- ✓ Solo travellers and couples who want near-empty beaches
- ✓ Budget visitors (guesthouses from 100 RMB)
- ✓ Photographers chasing wild coastline
Not for
- ✗ Casual swimmers — currents, slippery rocks, limited lifeguards
- ✗ Families who need showers, cafes and changing rooms
- ✗ Anyone on a one-day city itinerary without a strong hiking/solitude reason
Editor's field note · Verified May 2026
Stayed overnight here on a May weekend: dinner was two families and a handful of hikers. By contrast Xichong's strip was buzzing. If your instinct is 'quieter is better' this is the end of the trail to pick.
Overview
Dongchong Beach (东涌, also written as Dongchong, meaning East Bay) is Xichong's quieter, wilder neighbor — a rugged 1.5-kilometer beach that feels like a frontier outpost compared to the more developed beaches to the west. Backed by steep green hills and facing the open South China Sea, Dongchong is a beach for adventurers, hikers, and anyone who prefers character over comfort.
The beach has a raw, natural beauty that distinguishes it from the resort beaches. Coarse golden sand, rocky outcrops breaking the shoreline, and the constant sound of waves crashing against the headlands. The water is clean (Grade I-II by Ecology Bureau standards) and the waves are surfable, though generally smaller and less consistent than at Xichong.
Dongchong is best known as the starting point for the Dongchong-Xichong coastal hiking trail, arguably the best day hike in the Shenzhen area. The 8-kilometer trail follows the clifftops between the two beaches, offering spectacular views of the coastline, hidden coves accessible only by foot, and a genuine sense of wilderness that is rare so close to a major city. The hike takes 3-4 hours one way and is moderately challenging — good shoes, water, and sun protection are essential.
The village behind the beach is small and relatively undeveloped compared to Xichong, with a handful of guesthouses, simple restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere. Dongchong does not have the surf shop density of Xichong or the facilities of Dameisha, but it offers something they cannot: the feeling of being at the edge of the world, with nothing but sea and sky ahead.
How to Plan Your Day
A concrete plan for Dongchong, based on our visits. Start Bus E11 to Nanao then M231 to Dongchong — roughly 2 hrs. If hiking, start the trail by 8 AM.
Half-day plan (4-5 hours)
- 1Arrive mid-morning, drop bags at a village guesthouse (100-250 RMB) if staying.
- 2Walk the eastern rocky sections for tide pools — the western ridge has the classic panorama.
- 3Lunch at one of the 3-4 family seafood restaurants (60-120 RMB per person).
- 4If not staying, head back by 3 PM to avoid missing the last bus.
Full-day plan (7+ hours)
- 18 AM: start the Dongchong-Xichong coastal trail (8 km, 3-4 hrs).
- 2Lunch either packed or at a trail-adjacent beach.
- 3Afternoon: arrive Dongchong village, swim in the marked zone cautiously, or relax on the sand.
- 4Evening: seafood dinner and (optionally) a camp on the designated area, quieter than Xichong's.
Avoiding the crowds
Weekdays only for true solitude. The village is tiny and the trailhead is obvious at the eastern end. Start the hike before 8 AM in summer — there is no shade on the exposed trail.
Money tip
Cheapest base on the peninsula: 100-250 RMB rooms, 60-120 RMB meals. Pair with Shangdong (20 min drive) for a full wild-coast day with just one transport outlay.

Things to Do
Coastal Hiking
The Dongchong-Xichong trail is the signature activity. 8 km one way, 3-4 hours, stunning cliff and ocean views. The trailhead is clearly marked at the eastern end of the beach. Carry 2L+ water, wear proper shoes, and start before 8 AM to beat the heat.
Surfing
Smaller and less consistent than Xichong, but surfable on good days. Better for intermediate surfers who want uncrowded waves. A couple of small surf shops in the village offer board rental.
Camping
Designated camping areas available. Quieter and more rustic than Xichong's camping scene. Bring your own gear or rent from local operators.
Rock Pooling
The rocky sections at both ends of the beach create natural pools at low tide. Great for exploring marine life and cooling off without venturing into the open water.
Safety
Best Time to Visit
Dongchong Beach (东涌) offers ideal conditions during April-November.
Photo Spots
The trailhead viewpoint looking back at Dongchong Beach from above. The rocky coastline at the eastern end for dramatic seascapes. Sunrise from the beach — Dongchong faces east with an unobstructed horizon. The hidden coves along the hiking trail accessible only on foot.
History & Background
Dongchong was historically a fishing village, smaller and more isolated than Xichong. Its name, East Bay, reflects its position on the eastern side of the peninsula. The beach remained largely unknown to outsiders until the Dongchong-Xichong hiking trail gained popularity among Shenzhen's outdoor community in the 2010s. Today, while increasingly discovered, Dongchong retains a frontier character that distinguishes it from its more developed neighbors.
Visitor Tips
- • Start the Dongchong-Xichong hike early — before 8 AM to avoid midday heat on the exposed trail
- • Dongchong is the quieter starting point — if you want solitude, come here instead of Xichong
- • Pack food and water — village options are limited compared to Xichong
- • Wear proper hiking shoes on the trail — flip-flops will not cut it on the rocky sections
